504 — everyone is now 29

Xiaobai emailed everyone today to celebrate the Birthday of our youngest member. Thus, everyone has reached 29. How are we going to celebrate?…

Wow, it’s scary to look back. When we met, we were all only 18 years old. Our cheeks were all red like apples. We haven’t had a real romance, we haven’t been hurt by some guy either (well, if one or two had, then they didn’t tell us). We were still curious about dance party. We didn’t know yet how to put up with 5 other people. We hadn’t ever left the country. We would spend half a day making lanterns from oranges and celebrate Birthdays of members from a boy dorm room.

Now, we are scattered around the world. None two of us is in one city. More than half married, some are still happily single.

Remember, we were so into playing the Odd World, we sent one member to the cafeteria to bring back a bucket of food?

Remember, evenings after evenings, we gathered in front of that 15 inch monitor and watched VCDs. And every time, we felt super guilty afterwards.

Remember, we waited in line so many times for the only mini electric pot to boil instant noodles? We added Qingcai and eggs to make it the world’s best food in winter.

Remember, the last night of the graduation, we walked all around to find a hotel that would let us stay over and celebrate (because our dorm doesn’t provide electricity at night) ? But we didn’t have enough cash and the ATM was closed…

504

Actually, 504 started as 111 (or some close number). There were 6 girls from all over China that happened to be assigned to same dorm room. I was one of the 6. The names arranged by age (we were all born in the same year really) are:

Laoda, Xiaoniang, Hui, Xiaobai, Clara,Xiaoli.

Initially, we stayed inside of the campus. We witnessed some romantic and some not so romantic chasing games. After a year, we were moved to the Girls-Only dorm area. From that point forward, we were on the top of a solitary fortress that no boy can sing a song under the window any more.

It was not too bad really. Without the buzzing noise from boys, we actually built a strong bond between us. It didn’t matter to me anyways since no one would date me back then but I got to steal the other girls from all the boys that were watching covetously. Yes, none of us had a boyfriend for 2 years in 504 until the very last year. (Traitor!) Other dorms were not so lucky because there would be one or two out of 6 members that had a boyfriend and that number was increasing every year.
